Private island in Portland Harbor is for sale | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram

PORTLAND — House Island went on the market this afternoon, but before you get too excited about the prospect of island living, you may want to consider the asking price.

John Scribner, a real estate broker with Land Vest, said the 24-acre island, its historic fort, and three summer cottages have been listed for $4,850,000.

A generator provides electricity and residents must rely on fireplaces for warmth since there is no heat source. Wells provide drinking water. Fort Scammell was built in 1808.

Scribner said the island is privately owned. Scribner said Harold H. Cushing Jr. started talking seriously with Land Vest about selling the island six months ago.

“The decision did not come lightly for him, but island living can be difficult living,” Scribner said.

Cushing’s mother, Hilda Dudley, acquired House Island in 1954. Public access is restricted by the owners, who run boat tours to the island.

House Island is located in Portland Harbor near the entrance to Whitehead Passage, between Cushing Island and Peaks Island.

Here is a great Website about the island.

Wanna go halfsies?

The one I like is Pumpkin Knob... North side of Peaks in the Hussey Sound. I think the owners are from NH, but if that sucker ever goes on the market, I'll beg, borrow and steal to get it!
