Nah, the Mainship Pilot 34' actually doesn't hold it's value very well. That price is good, but not out of line for what they command. The company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year which hasn't helped the price.

These are mass produced boats, not custom built Downeasters. Nothing wrong with that, but you can't compare the price of a Mainship to an Ellis.

Hey Jaxy,

I don't think you will get too many enthusiastic responses from the people on this forum. People here are enthusiasts of hand built boats, built one at a time by New England (if not Maine) craftsman. Think of it as a "Ford versus a Bentley" analogy. Both will get you where you need to go, but the Bentley was built by a craftsman for people that desire that craftsmanship.

There is nothing wrong with a Mainship for 90% of users. It is a mass produced boat built in a factory. This model was originally built as a "Luhrs Allura". I see a fair number of them still in use today from the 1980s.

The Mainship has a lot of creature comforts for entertaining. I see it more as a floating cocktail party boat, than a fishing boat. The boat would be fine to anchor in a protected cove and enjoy watching the kids swim off the transom. For coastal inshore cruising it would work really well. I personally would look for a single engine model for simplicity and economy.

Volvo = expensive parts and will you be able to get parts easily in Croatia ??
IPS ? are those outdrives or those new "pods" both high maintenance !!
Joystick control = more electrical junk to break down easily.

I would also prefer hand build or part build gm26 or bhm 25,and finish it here..Now after 1 month of searching de boats on top of my list is
gm 26 DOWNEAST CRUISER SEDAN , i think it will suit my needs the best...Few days trip for bft and bottom fishing for 2 people and half/day cruising with family and friends ...

As for volvo parts its not that hard to find the parts ,it seems that volvo lowered the price on engines a lot in europe and yanmar to... ips are pods ;)

@steveinak maybe its true that pods ips are junk but they have some claims that they are super efficient but really over priced pair of ips 350 with 260 hp engines alone i think would cost around 150 k usd

save on fuel and spend the money on repairs :D I dealt with volvo duoprop outdrives for 20 years commercial gillnetting here in alaska, junk junk junk. There is nothing like a slow turning diesel attached to a big transmission, big shaft and big prop steered by a big rudder.

I have no idea of cost, but the builder Stacey Raymond is about 15 miles south of me. I've talked to him at the Maine Boat Builders Show (which you should attend in March if you are really going to move ahead with importing a boat to Croatia!).

Stacey is a great guy, he donated his time to help rebuild the Japanese fishing fleet after the Tsunami last year. STORY HERE.

His E-mail is: [email protected]

This past year was a little disappointing compared to years past. Probably a sign of the economy. Also, March isn't exactly the best season to visit Maine (plane tickets might be cheaper?). But none-the-less the Maine Boat builders show is a great time for those in NE to start dreaming about the months ahead after a long winter.

Maine Boat Builders Show. As a potential buyer, you can get up and close to the actual builders and they can show you their craft. I hope this year turns things around for these craftsman!
