I am looking at possibly making an offer on an older 27' JC and am looking for any information on this hull (pro's/con's). The boat will be used as oyster dredge and recreational fishing. It has a soft floor, and other issues found in boats of similar age. Any input it would be greatly appreciated!
Also if anyone knows the approximate value of these boats in fair condition or something I can compare to.

Thanks!

Very few JC 27 were ever made. They were built by Jack Cadario in the late 1980s but never really caught on. Cadario had Royal Lowell design the JC 31. From that design Cadario made the 35 JC which was a stretched 31 mold and later the 27 which was an exact smaller copy of the 31.
Most that were made were sold with gas motors and motor boxes. They were an 18-19 knot boat.
Once JC went out of business the 27 mold was never passed on like the 31 & 35.

Beleieve or not privateer at one point had the 27'jc mold. They only built a few of them. I rode on one of them at a jamboree in port of egypt years ago. I believe it had a 220hp plus perkins in it. Very nice but, keel walked after 17-18knts and the engine box took up alot of room. Again i dont believe they built more then about 6 or so.

I remember seeing a new one of these for sale at Gone Fishing Marina in the late eighties. It was a center console version. Beautiful lines. It sat for a long time before being purchased and the marina owner was really willing to negotiate. I was a two boat owner at the time or else I would have jumped on it.

Wesmac is a DE It is hard chinned like a JC and a premier vessel. Hard chine Des like the JC which currently have over 500 hulls in service are excellent platforms. The JC hull molds are still being produced by both Eastern & Judge yachts. That should tell you a lot about the Royal Lowell hardchine DE design. With hard chines you get a very stable work platform with plenty of room and sea ability.

weat coast JC 31s

I'll pass this along.

Tony @ Seaboard Marine mentioned to me that 31 JCs he's repowered are well regarded commercial fishing boats out on the west coast.

Most here know his MO in doing "west coast" repowers is remote v-drive, engine placement close to the stern and a BIG rudder moved back "bout" even with the stern.

Moving the rudder back to the stern, creates the leverage for steaming back to port with big loads on board being pushed by big following seas.

JC

28 years of wheel time on a 31 JC many canyon trips and few white knuckle rides. Pound for pound & inch for inch JC makes a fine vessel. The proof as stated earlier is two companies still use the JC Molds. Every boat is a compromise in one way or another. Head sea, beam sea, even a full following sea, the boat performs well. Admitted you need to be an experienced piolet to run any boat in heavy seas. Following quartering sea JCs can be a little tender, but nothing that a good captain cannot handle.
I enjoy the boat & the ride and unlike some DE boats my feet are always dry......LOL

Go ahead and knock the 31 JC all you want but rather have the JC than a 28 BHM any day especially if I were running a charter Business off of that platform............
