Defiinately not a commercial bot but sharp looking and seems suited for fishing. Anyone familiar with this boat? What is the lineage? How does it ride and handle?

Judge's aren't really DE by lineage. They don't have keels for example. The running gear is exposed below.

More of a chessie bay style than a DE. I've never been on one, but my guess is they don't handle as well in large seas.

I'm sure that comment will draw a lot of heat though.

I "BELIEVE" the Judge 32 DE is actually a DE (as apposed to the other Judge models which are Chesapeake dead-rises). I think it is actually a JC 31, similar to the Eastern 31. I think the JC molds went to Eastern and Judge.

your thinking of the judge 31 in which only a few were made, the 32 is a flat bottom half keel boat

Well there you go. Glad I didn't profess that I was sure that they were one and the same :D.

I do know that Judge had a fire a while back and lost a lot of their molds.

I know the judges line very well as I was very close to pulling the trigger on one. Bill Judge builds a really good boat. The 32 is a modified Eastern 32 so it is a downeast. He builds a really pretty Deadrise style 36 that does extremely well in the tight chop we get here on the Chesapeake. I run a 31 Beal and sometime I miss those extra 5 feet to span the chop.

The Judge 32 & JC 31 are if fact the same. The 31 JC is actually 31'10” but they called it a 31. Go figure. The one big difference is that Judge cut back the keel, which most likely added speed do to less drag & better water flow. Amazing how long the JC mold has been around and still going strong by two different builders. The 1st 3 photos are the Judge followed by my 1984 Original JC.

reason why i ask, is notice the strakes on the FB i posted vs yours, keel is shortened and not as deep. Also looks like waterline change, and the forward section doesn't seem to be AS round bilged ?

I sent an email to Judge and was told it's the JC hull but the bottom has been "completly redesigned"...

That's funny - the Eastern guys told me they had "completely redesigned" the bottom as well.

I still love the 31 p-towns.

Judge vs JC

Judge vs JC

OK here is my thoughts on these boats. The 31 JC was originally designed as a work boat. The hard chines along with the deep full keel gave this boat great stability to the working lobsterman pulling pots and other commercial fisherman. In addition the large full keel was great on the hook.
Most of the early JCs had low power and in fact were commercial. Once the sex appeal of this hull caught on the JC entered into the sportfishing world. More power was added and speed became more important. Dragging that large keel around was a negative. JC realized the draw back and started to make changes by tapering the keel( Photo #1), however it was too late and the rights were sold.

Judge pick up in the direction I believe JC was heading. He severally modified the keel. Cutting it way back bring the JC bottom into a new and better era for this great hull.

If you study the modafation it appears that the changed were done by plugging the mold. Which allows the builder to remove the plug if there is a call for the older design.

Judge did a great job. He reduced keel drag and kept the skeged rudder. Plus he put additional plugs in for the trim tabs.

The bow and forward enter was left as original. If you have ever had the privilege of piloting a 31 JC into a head sea you would understand why.

In my option based on today’s need for speed and economy Mr. Judge did everything right and built the better mouse trap for the sporty.
