We had a local charter captain had a bit of an accident in some dense fog, no body likes to here it but becarefull. Nobody wants to see you get hurt out there or worse. Good job to the local CG chapter

Ouch!!

Seems to me a charter captain would know the location of a submerged boulder around an inlet, no?

I'm not familiar with the area, only been through there once many years ago so just speculation.

Atleast that charter capt has the fog to blame.
This was 2 years ago in Boston Harbor on a flat ass sunny calm day !

Just goes to show you what losing situational awareness will do in a split second. That captain probably won't be sleeping well tonight!

That Friday was the day I boogied out of Woods Hole, a few days earlier I did see another rather large vessel encounter rocks. That triangular area north of Nonamesset Island in Great harbor with (if you aren't paying attention) conflicting marker buoys had a very large ship ground out, get stuck, attempt to back up, then powered over the pile to get away. No idea if it was this "Cocktails" or not, couldn't see the name on the transom from the WHOI dock.

Here is the chart for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about. Look for the cursor.

I live near and fish out of this inlet and it is clearly marked on a chartplotter if you dont mark the inlet yourself . I can only suspect that Capt Al was not paying attention .There is about an 1/8 th of a mile of submerged jetty on the north side of the inlet with a tower marking the end . Also a 35 foot Viking rolled in the same inlet yesterday , i guess the coast guard earned there keep yesterday.

Back in the late eighties I fished on a dragger out of Woods Hole. One of the Vineyard ferries hit the Ledge in the fog and started taking on water. I think it was the old Uncatena.

So they turn around and are racing back to the dock. We are on the back deck working on gear on the way out. The captain slows down and tries to get out of their way. I look up and to this day can't believe we didn't get in a collision. Couldn't have fit a yard stick between us.

The official excuse was all the little boats in the harbor get scared and try to keep the bouys in sight. Makes the radar look like a swarm of bees.

As a former party boat Captain, I can sympathize. We have no rocks in the Great South Bay, but plenty of low water. I ran an 80' boat with 50 people hard aground in a spot I was familiar with. Screaming flood tide, 25kts SW wind, look away for split second and that was that. No damage or injuries except my pride. I can tell you it will sharpen your skills for some time to come.

Here's our local shenanigans. Portland Maine got a new $3.2 million dollar fire-boat, and ran it hard aground just a couple of months after putting it into service... $90,000 repair .

Then a year or so later, they were on what was claimed to be a training run, where they ran hard aground and did $54,000 worth of damage. The Portland Press Herald did a little investigation, and it turns out that the fire captain (not the skipper) had 12 of his closest friends and family on board  (some training run). It turns out, that the fire-boat has been used as a party barge for an unknown period of time for the PFD.

Thank god the city taxpayers didn't pay for the $1.8 million harborside clubhouse the fire chief requested two years earlier to support the new party boat.

Mousetrap, the fire boat was hauled out at samples shipyard (boothbay harbor shipyard) after that second fiasco. A buddy and i had a unofficial tour of it and that thing is pretty sweet, TONS of electronics, i cant imagine how they managed to hit such a marked area of wrecks, or whatever it was they hit

Interesting, I thought they repaired it in Rockland . Boothbay makes a lot more sense...

I haven't been on it, but I've been alongside of it at a couple of events (such as a spectator for the Lobster Boat Races), and yes indeed it is a SWEET rig!

Easy to pay for all those electronics when it's on the taxpayers dime, too bad they don't know how to use them.At least they look cool.............................
