Anyone use a portable drop light ?
Yes will I did. They do a pretty good job . It’s just annoying having a wire run across the deck but if you have no lights or yours breaks in the middle of the season it’s a good alternative..

I’m reading up on under water lights.
I’m seeing Lumitec lights for short ($3-$500).
What makes one worth $2500-$3000 in comparison, lumens ? Quality of the light ???

For anyone that has them through the bottom of the hull facing down, is there any water flow or trim tab effect from the water traveling across ?

Also
What’s preferred for light color ?

I’ve got my transom wide open at the moment.
Now would be the time to install a set. Either straight back or down through the bottom of the hull.
Thanks in advance.

It’s not suggested and they are not designed to be in the flow of water along the hull unless recessed. The Lumitec Sea Blaze are only attached with three #10 screws which would rip off pretty easily
the screws don't really do anything for mounting. they are just there to keep the light in place while the 5200 cures and that 's what holds the light in place.

Pricing has to do with lumens and expected longevity. When I bought mine, I had two electronics installers say pay me now or pay me later referencing time to replacement of course dependent upon the amount of use. Both said go Lumishore or Ocean and buy from them or buy myself and they'd still do the install. I went with 3 - Lumishore THX 803's, 500's at 5,000 lumens each and a 110 degree beam. Their SMX series is fine for transom mounting (screws and 5200).

As far as trim tab or thru hull effect with lights mounted on the bottom, it's no different than any other mounted thru hull.

5200 and screws are fine for the transom, but for the bottom of the hull you'll want a thru hull model just like everything else on your bottom .. that's for just in case you hit or bump anything, as the screws and 5200 just may not keep the light secure.

I had friends with blue lights and they have no issue attracting bait and for striper fishing it's mayem in the lights, so I went blue.

I say, do it while you've got easy access.

They most definitely see color, when you have rainbow where it switches from every color every 10 seconds or so it is amazing how the bait will just disappear and come back.

If fish could not see a form of color there would be no reason for mother nature to give species like squid and octopus the ability to instantly change color depending on mood. Tuna for example see in an ultraviolet spectrum. Light is bent underwater. Contrast becomes important.

They do not like blue, I personally think the best color is a shade of yellow/white. Green and red are also very productive.

Orange will typically bring up the most bait. As far as catching pelagics, shut the lights, get the bites. I feel like light in the water will turn them off. I wouldnt run them on the bottom side of the hull where there is water pressure while running. Some guys do but I would go transom only where there is no pressure on the surface from running.

I have had mine for 16 years. Aqua light makes lights for that very purpose.

I'm sure those aqua lights aren't cheap,. There's definitely better lights for under the hull than the typical surface mount

Back to the actual lights.
It looks like with thru hull type mounted (Same as a transducer) or surface mount.
I would NEVER trust a surface mount under the hull and would be very skeptical of a surface mounted anywhere below the water line but I’m reading some people think it’s ok/safe to to surface mount them below the water line on the transom. I suppose the likely hood of hitting something with the transom knocking them off or loose is not that risky.
How are surface mount light wires entered into the hull ?
Through center/back side of the light or wire /harness through the transom above the water line ?
