Design details
The new Lowell 38 is 38' 9" x 13' 1"; Carroll's Sea Scribe design is 37' 9" x 12'. (The Lowell 43 is 42' 11" x 15') Thorobred has more beam for her length but not a whole lot. Another of Dad's wood designs that we compare with is Sara Bev, which is 38' 4" x 12' 6".
Our design goal was to offer a fiberglass boat in the mid/upper-30s size range that would be a hardy work boat, fuel efficient, easy handling, beautiful underway and beautiful when sitting at the dock or mooring. We also had some ideas for the wetted surface that we wanted to try, to punch up the speed and ease of handling.
We think the new 38 is somewhat more nimble and a bit prettier at rest than the 43, while still having the same hardiness and working capability. The 43 is also very easy-handling but is just larger. It's hard to compare without making one boat sound worse than another, but of course we think both are excellent boats.
At the risk of blatantly promoting ourselves, I will say that the owner, the surveyor, and local fishermen who have driven the boat have all been quite amazed at how easily she handles and the ultra smooth ride in all kinds of conditions.
