The one design that caught my attention is the Cape Dory 42. The few big Cape Dory's I seen were all draggers, 34-38 presumed feet.

Royal Lowell

Royal Lowell was the Man. He also designed the Jarvis Newman 46, which I can attest is a battleship of a boat. I recall reading somewhere maybe he also designed the 56' DMR, which like a JC, is hard chined. I've got a 56' DMR and she has done well for us, despite the fact she is twin screw w/ that big keel. I regret not going to look at that Lowell 43 Elizabeth Thomas when she was for sale six years ago. At the time I was not a Detroit fan and I ended up buying a bay boat (Ches. deadrise) which I was very glad to get shed of and replace w/ the DMR a year later.

Royal lowell 31 JC is still a lengend and it is still being built by both Eastern & Judge Yachets.

Hey Capt. Larry, Beautiful model. Do you know where I could get a set of plans to build one like it? I bought a 35' JC last spring and am looking for a winter project before I start working on the boat in the spring. Thanks,

cj

Royal Lowell (designer of the JC31, Bruno 55, Jarvis Newman 46, and countless others) wrote a book called “Boatbuilding Down East”.

In the back of that book are about 50 different hull designs available for purchase.

The JC 31 hull isn’t explicitly labeled as such, rather it’s listed as “31’ Vee Bottom Fiberglass Model; Plan #28”.

The contact is as follows (who, as I mentioned in the DEBF site, is directly related to Royal Lowell):

William Lowell
14 Osborn Street
Lisbon, Maine 04250-6643
(207) 353-9503

I literally called him, confirmed that Plan #28 was in fact the JC31, and he sent me the plan in the mail along with a lot of other info on the hull and various layouts. He was super friendly and very thorough. He charges for the plans on a per foot (of the hull) basis.

I would encourage you to buy the book on Amazon to see all the available designs.

Hope this helps!

A little bit, I have one and talked to Jack years ago at the Mass. boat show about them. It's all here in the nickyp thread "was the 26 jc a good design?". If you want check out what is there and if you have anymore questions, give it a post and I'll try and answer what I can.

Jesse:

Could you be referring to the COBRA, which was similar to the WEJACK?

The COOT was built by Myron Cowden, in Amesbury, MA, and the WEJACK was built by it's owner-operator, Phil Fessenden of Ipswich, Massachusetts.
