Looking for feedback on mooring sizes.. I am looking at several downeasts in the 30-33 range .. I am going to moor it on a muddy bottom.. About 12 ft at low tide... Its inside of a bay relatively protected but a nor'easter will make it dance a bit.. I was thinking a 400lb mushroom with 15ft of 3/4" followed by 15ft of 5/8" would do it.. Any suggestions? What do you use

my Tripp road out the hurricane of 2006 on this setup

20# of mushroom for every foot of boat length
heavy bottom chain length 1.5x the depth of MHW
shackles a size larger than the chain being joined and wired closed with .041 SS safety wire
lighter (3/8" or 1/2") top chain equal to the MHW depth
shackle top chain to the bottom of a swivel and shackle pennants to the top of that swivel (along with the shackle to the buoy)
polydyne pennants should be 3x the height of the pulpit from the water

Bill,
Check with your harbor master and/or Natural Resources Dept. Most towns have pretty strict regulations re: mooring sizes, pendant, chain etc. I have a 400lb mushroom and that's overkill- but will hopefully move up to a larger boat in the future. Some towns are requiring Helix screw anchors if it is a tight mooring field. My mooring is required to be serviced and inspected every three years by a certified inspector by the town.

Thanks for the responses.. In my town there is no laws its just drop your mooring and you are good..in the next town over they get all shitty and you gotta have a "professional mooring guy" build it..drop it..and then send coordinates to harbor master who then looses them and takes an eon to send the permit..all while he starts putting fines on your boat.... I have a 500lb concrete block that I made for my skiff and dropped it off my fathers raft.all of the moorings around here are mushrooms with a handful of concrete mooring fields..

Bill, if you follow Hamilton's instructions you will be secure. using that set-up and a 200# shroom my 22' boat weathered 50 knot winds in the 2006 storm that left dozens of moored boats above the high-tide line. one of those boats came careening past mine, missing by only 25 feet. ended up smashed between a seawall and a pier
