I have my "new" hauler installed on the Blackfin.

I did the rod holder and kick plate with some thought.
Had the kick plate fabricated/polished.

When the pole is "not in the holder" all looks factory.

The pole itself is temporary/ 1.25" outside diameter galvy pipe out of
Home Depot. I drilled the pole etc., cheap pulley, all to test out my 10 new traps.

The goal is to keep the pot lines out of the props and not beat the side of the boat up !

If it works out ok, I'll have a nice pole made up and maybe buy a Safe-T hauler.

I'll let you know how it goes!!! LOL

Using 30" traps. 10 pots, no trawls. 30-35 ft of water.

I hauled a "test trap" today, seemed OK.

If I can pull the traps safely with one person and have some fun, I'll have a marine welder make up a polished/braced stainless or aluminum curved pole and upgrade the pulley.

Right now I call this my "ghetto hauler pole" !!!! 29.99 @ the Home Depot !!!! LOL

Bill that thing is going to fold up as soon as you get a bit hung down or get some strain on it with the long length and only a short section braced by the washboard there is a lot of leverage there, be careful with whoever is around it. Don't waste your money on one of those safe t pullers they are expensive and don't haul very well unless you buy the "heavy duty model:rolleyes:" and then you might as well buy a electra dyne and only have to buy it once.

Steve, you are correct on the leverage and the high kick plate.
I know it is a flimsy setup, but for now it's what I have.
If I get hung I'll leave the trap for the "crew" to haul by hand off the swim platform like we been doin for 20 years.

I have 10 traps. All for fun. If I ride out and pull two traps instaed of 10, no biggee !!

If I get aggravated enough or tear the side off the boat, well then maybe it will be time to pull the trigger!!

The shy did not fall !!

Hauled a couple of traps yesterday.

Davit didn't fold, side of the boat stayed on, didn't capsize.

All and all had some fun with no problems.

So far so good LOL.

Another couple of hauls of testing, I'll have a nice SS davit made up.

btw, I can extend the pole down through the top of the box to the deck inside the box.

Keeping it simple without cutting up the boat.

Two pot test haul about 30 minutes after tossing the 10 of them in all baited up with frozen macks and beef hides.

"testing" the davit pole. Couldn't wait a couple of days!

Steve from AK has me "all neved up" bout folding up the pole or tearin the side of the boat off when pullin a trap !!!!!

I'll keep a running tally for the season !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

All right i was wrong(for now:D) it didn't fold up. Bill you didn't need that davit just bundle up all those fishing rods in the picture and hang the block off of them:eek: it would give you a nice cushioned effect when you haul the pots! Put some of those plastic bumpers on the pots so they don't scratch up your boat.

The corners do help, but you got the trap rigged up backwards, they are supposed to fall down further into the trap, not towards the heads

Just change your bridle to the other side where the funnels are.

Yes, I bridled the traps so when I swing them into the boat the tops open without turning the trap.
Makes it easier for me to empty/bait and toss back in.

If I don't get 7-12 keepers per 10 trap pull (means the lobsters are falling out ! LOL) I'll change the bridles

Bill the weak spot is at the gunnel and thats where its gonna fold if & when it does. If it were me i'd try and get a piece of shafting or even pound in some lengths of rebar inside the pipe from the deck up to the level of the brace you added. Nice new block by the way. Cut and file smooth that extra that sticks up from the eye bolt please:D
