Hydrogen sounds good but b/4 we go off the rails in another direction; does anyone know how much electricity it takes to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen, compress, and transport it. Those questions should be readily answered in Iceland where they have been running things on hydrogen for some years albeit with almost free geothermal electricity. I'd like to listen to a discussion of power sources between people that don't have vested interests b/4 we go down another subsidized dead end. Where would I go to hear that?

If you start a new thread I'd be happy to share what I know from my time studying economics and env science and from my time living fully off grid for a year at the cape Eleuthera institute. Wikipedia is a great resource as well, there's so much to read and learn there

I just recently did a 1000 mile straight trip with my '22 Colorado v6, towing.

Trailer probably was 1800 lbs, not a lot but definitely creates some drag, truck was packed with an extra 500 lbs or so. Cruise set at 72 mph mostly, 15 mpg.

Cost round trip, 2000 miles, pretty much exactly same as flying. That's discounting wear on my truck, but also discounting the fact you can't check a Harley. And charging an EV - which you'd be doing for sure, isn't free either. Nor is an EV immune to wear, nor could you drive straight with an EV, nor could you buy one for the 35K I paid, nor is there a place to charge an EV where I rent (and I can about guarantee in 5 years there still won't be :) )..

So my take, today, they remain not just impractical but also incapable, and they still aren't cost effective IMO. Not for me anyway, not yet. I need a fuel you can fill a tank with in 10 minutes.

Will trolley cars be making a comeback? No tracks this time, but imagine getting on a self-driving trolley?

Easy to live off the grid in eleuthera. They practically do it for you by shutting off the water and power unannounced for days at a time. We were flushing the toilet with 5 gallon pails of salt water last year for like 4 days.

Hahaha valid. Calling the utilities down there a grid is generous!
