After a long and grueling search, I picked up this 1980 31' BHM. Now I just need to find an engine, gear, windows, re-do the interior of wheelhouse, etc., etc. I'm thinking a reman. 6bta 370 for power, not sure of gear or prop yet. Any recommendations or advice are welcome. This pic is from her earlier days. Windows now removed, power also removed.

Welcome aboard. I just picked up a 31 bhm myself, and am just getting to know mine. Just for comparison to your thoughts on a 370 cummins, mine's got a 370hp volvo w/2" shaft swinging a 28x27 5 bladed prop. On her first run we made 16kts @2400 rpm. So far I love the boat, but don't have much time on her yet. I do know I love the way she drifts, compared to my old blackfin.

I think there's a couple of 31's down your way, i'm sure the owners will chime in here.
Good luck, nice boat.

John Deere all the way. I have a cummins in one of my charter boats that I have changed 6 times and a John Deere in the other one that has 8 k hours and starts right up after long winters. Easy choice.

Good luck with your project. The gear of choice for the 31 BHM is the 2:5 gear with a 2800 RPM motor. Your shafting should be 1.75 to 2". 370 HP should give you 16 knots.

I'm not sure I have the height to fit a Deere under the deck. Pricing may also be an issue. Haven't researched them.

Thanks Larry. Is it safe to assume you would recommend a 28"wheel with the 2.5-1 gear?

I just bought a 1990, 31 BHM finished by Flye Pt as a cruiser in pretty much original condition , 1530 hours total , and she is the first DE I have ever owned so I'm learning as I go. 210 hp cummins, 1-3/4 shaft, 26 square 4 blade prop. She had a original FB which I remove for transport and decided after a lot of threats of mutantny left it off and am happy I did. PM me if you want pics. I have plenty. She has run sweet for me so far. Looking fwd to the Hali and Ling happening, gonna slay em!

I can't find it now, but there was a guy on Craigslist in Virginia that had a bunch of Cummins for sale from 330hp up to 700hp I think. Probably not too helpful but he's out there some where.

Congrats, it would be great to see pics of the boat with and without the bridge.

My 31 will do 13 knts. with a 235 Volvo. Just goes to show it is a pickup truck, and not a sport car. Beast in a head sea. Never pounds. Burns nothing with the old Volvo.6-8 GPH. Almost embarrassing compared to some single diesel boats with the high H.P. Getting 5-7 knts. more speed. Need speed, get a Sportie, and get 35- ?????? gal. per hour. Love the BHM. Just my opinion !
