Interesting info about one of the last surviving PT boats, 200 GPH at cruise and 500 GPH at WOT.....50 knots, powered with three V-12, supercharged, intercooled 1850 HP Packards.

My father had a friend who served on a PT boat, and he used to tell me that the torpedoes were powered by alcohol. And the crew use to drain a little and drink it. When they would fire the torpedo and it didnt reach the target cause it ran out of alcohol, the Captain would know the crew was getting a buzz.

There was a Packard in a 36 back in 2000
Mild mannered one, only 13,500 hp

Mine have intercoolers and are rated at 18,500 hp. Missing the carb for one of them, been trying to find one for a while now. See that big pipe toward the back of the engine? That's how they put it into and out of gear, takes 100 pounds of force to dog it in, there's no flywheel and it's a mechanical gearbox. If the starter went on one of their engines, they could build up speed with the other two and dog it in to fire it up, just like a standard shift vehicle.

Pretty sure they're off the mark just a wee bit with the 500 gph, more like 60 (which is what a 1,000 hp Cat consumes btw).

They weigh in at 3,000 lbs including the gearbox and are magnificent!

And that's 60 each, so 180 gph.

Still a bunch, but not 500!

Fun fact: if you take a Packard 4M2500 and force feed it alcohol at 26 psi you can produce 4,000 hp!

If you increase the pressure to 27... results may vary (makes explody sounds)

I've never fired my Packards off.

The gentleman we had contact with caught a slight case of death and his ol' lady got rid of everything within 3 days.

That sound is unmistakable, I haven't researched it but I believe that Packard built it in WW11 under license from RR, it's the basic Merlin engine?.
Can't imagine what it felt like with 3 of those going flat out.
