Hello everyone

I am getting ready to upgrade my rig for a downeast. I had my eye on this 36 Beal and wanted to get some feedback on this boat. Speed, price, layout, equipment and any other point that you can share your thoughts on.

Also, if anyone has seen this boat in person please let me know what you think.

I fish out of Montauk NY and currently have a 30' Pursuit and think a downeast is the next step for me and my family.

Thanks
Anthony

24000 lbs seems a bit heavy and I would check the cruise speed against the engine load. I would not push much past 70% for a high cruise speed. Also look at fuel numbers at cruise as it might be light on fuel for a good canyon run. I would think there is plenty if you run it at about 18 kts.

I love the look of the boat, good luck.

I looked at that boat with my friend this past summer.
The boat is a beast !
It's pretty much brand new.
The boat is out of Scituate Ma. but has been down in Cataumet Ma.
The broker that showed us the didn't seem to know much about this type of boat as he couldn't answer 1/2 my questions (typical salesman)
According to him it burned around 12 gals at cruise.
The boat has been for sale for a while. The $ is probably high in this economy and was told the owner not motivated at all to deal.

Nice rig ! The only thing missing in my book is a genset. I don't see one listed in the specs.

That 36 was in my marina for a few years. I do know it has been for sale just not sure if it is still the same owner. The owner I knew was a real good guy I think there may have just been some personal issues driving the sale.

It was a very very nice ride. It was always my favorite boat in the harbor. It was used very lightly for the two or three season it was around. I can't tell you exact numbers off the top of my head but I do know from a conversation with the owner at the time he would have had to do a 50 or 75 gallon bladder to get to Georges with some comfort factor, that was 160nm each way. All of the owners previous boats were canyon fished and rigged and I do believe this one was no different.

If you have any questions about the build, call Stew at SW Boatworks
www.swboatworks.com he built this boat and the quality of his work is top notch. I love this boat and other than a few personal preferences I would be more than happy to have it. Good Luck and if you speak with Stew tell him Dave from Relentless gave you his information.

Thanks but keep them coming

The boat was originally named Lady D and I have spoke to Capt Stew about her. I was hoping for a gen set and have grown used to it because I have one now. He is a real nice guy with plenty of knowledge.
I really like the look of this boat and have also considered a new build. This boat does have most of what I am looking for. I would like some different seating in the house. The seats seem a little narrow from the pics. The cockpit controls and hauler are sweet and a must for me.
How do you feel about the power? Would you build this boat with a different engine?
The other positive is that it is floating and there is no build time but based on reading threads on other new builds it does seem like a great experience to get one of them built. The owner is in no rush to sell her. Price seems pretty firm based on some feedback.

Why do you question the power? Do you think it needs more horses? I have the same engine and it has been nothing short of solid. You could put more power in it but I don't think it will do much for you in terms of the ride.

Boat looks sweet. Not sure if I believe the 21 knot cruise with a full load. Most of the 36's I have seen are 18 knot boats. You should try a charter on the Lori Jay to see if you like the ride. You may end up buying it cheap and redoing her.

I was curious to know what power everyone would choose. I am sure it is enough power but there is a lot of knowlege on this site and I value every comment and opinion.

I keep my boat in Star Island Yacht Club and have considered the Lori Jay but not sure if I want to rebuild a boat at this point in my life.

Not sure you know this but it is for sale privatly in the LI fisherman for less $ then online. I rode this boat when it was new because the WB was on my short list of hulls. At the time it was one of the sweetest boats around. 18knot cruise, alot of room, st side door, in deck fish box. I have not been on it in years and it has always been a charter boat so I'm not sure of its current condition. The motor is a great engine but I'm sure it has a ton of hours on it. I believe the owner had some health issues and had another capt. running but that is 2nd hand information.

Price is not right

Good Chance I feel the same way. Nice rig but @ 280 or even 250k it is not a deal.

Im pricing a new build as well to compare and see what my options are.

Estimator,
I understand that you are looking for a deal but just keep in mind, that to build that boat the owner spent every penny they are asking.
I think this is why you see so many builders with no work, people get sticker shock when they hear how much it costs to build a boat in Maine. The normal response is "but it is just a simple lobster boat". And they walk out to find something else.

This had my eyes open a little wider then normal. Not saying they are over priced just that I didn't realize what it costs.

Boats for Sale at SW Boatworks in Lamoine Maine: 38' Calvin Beal Sportfishing Kit Boat

Mike,
I agree it is surprising and that price is without an engine, add another 80K for that, 20K for electronics and you still have to add all the extras that might make you comfortable and the upgrades. With out question that boat is north of 300K finished as a basic tuna boat.
