A petition has been started - the link is below - pain in the arse to sign up for the petition but this is worth signing up for - I did - hope all of you will do the same and post to your facebook pages etc.

Appoint Dr. Brian Rothschild as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Administrator.

Dr. Jane Lubchenco is stepping down from her position as the NOAA Administrator. We the People who are directly impacted by NOAA policies would like President Obama to appoint Dr. Brian Rothschild to replace her as head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Thank you for your consideration of our petition.

This scientist is well know in MA for being one of the ones who actually does look out for fisherman and understand what happens when you put such strict restrictions in place what happens to the community. He has been a leader in MA and was considered for the position previously when Obama picked Jane. You can do a little research and listen to him on some audio links and he saved the scallop industry. This was done by using cameras and proving the government wrong on their stock analysis.

I would endorse him and certainly hope and would expect many commercial and recreational groups would also.

I was in North Carolina during Christmas and had dinner with a family that goes back 5 generations in commercial fishing(shrimpers). one of the daughters has worked at NOAA in Washington for 15 years. She told me that none of the rank and file at NOAA is shedding any tears for the departure of Lubchenco. I mentioned Brian Rothschild and she said that while he is a good guy and friendly to fishing interests he had damaged his cause in 2008 by his long history of poking a stick in the face of the NOAA bureaucracy. She says the problem now is that Lubchenco left her cronies in NOAA well entrenched and protected. They will oppose Rothschild if he were to be nominated.

I agree with you - please educate yourself - Plenty of info available with a quick google search - Unfortunately I think the current administration has him blackballed but after the beating we have taken here in the South Atlantic Grouper/Snapper fishery this past year we have to get involved and be vocal and do it in a hurry - I will be out of business soon if our fisheries are continued to be mismanaged and hijacked by EDF, PEW, and the like!

A message from Dr. Rothschild regarding what he would do as NOAA administrator.

As you know, a NOAA administrator has many different tasks. Some are well known, but others seem to come from nowhere. The BP spill is a good example. Because of this an Administrator needs to work on a set of principles. Here are some examples.

1. Follow the letter of the law(it seems almost unnecessary to say this, but the past administration would have done a better job if they had studied the laws that govern fisheries management).
2. Focus the scientific effort on critical issues and base management decisions on science.
3. Listen to the folks that are most effected by management decisions.
4. Promote cooperative research.
5. Be transparent and operate in the sunshine.
6. Provide incentives to employees to follow principals
7.Integrate elements of NOAA to be more cost effective(e.g. Sea Grant and NMFS).

Five stars from me for Dr.Rothschild. The fish and the fisherman can only be so lucky to get him!
