I wanted to start a new thread because ,well the other prop thread was above my head.
Just wanted to say I dropped off my prop at H&H in salem ma today.
It had a couple of dings and looked like it needed a tune up.
Needless to say the guy behind the counter was great. Not only did I get a crash course in pitch , size , rpm etc. I got a tour of the shop.
Wow , although I learned more in 25 min today then I have in 10yrs of being behind the wheel. I also learned to leave the prop figuring to the experts.
I was contemplating having my prop taken down a bit, I figured ill get a better idea next season with a fresh one.
Fyi : H&H = good guys , helpfull as hell, and good old fashion American Workmanship.

I just had the same exact expirence today (2pm) at Hale propeller in Saybrook CT. Randy (the father) disected my prop, showed / taught me about all my wheels imperfections and the long term effect of them.
Left knowing I had a bronze prop that had been reconed twice and the prop is older than my hull. He asked hp. gear ratio, shaft size and max rpm; then he told me bronze is a better material than nibral in my case.

I was told the Nibral was best in my case, but I was given a lesson about the differences. I was also shown a 4' bronze prop.

I guess if you need a custom water proof marble steam shower in your beach estate, im your man, but today I felt really dumb, however greatful for the free schooling,.

I take that back , at least the "free" part. havnt gotten the bill for the prop work yet. Being a contractor in Ma, I seldom question how much it costs to keep the lights on.

So not to take anything away from the other propeller shops but also had a great experience with Accutech. Very helpful, very informative and excellant docuemtation on the extent of the required repair.

My prop is at H&H as we speak. Had the prop picked up at a local marina, so have not been schooled. The prop hasn't been touched in 10 years, so I figured it was time to have it looked at.

My marina offered to have it delivered as well, but I had questions, and dont trust anyone when im told its gonna be the same price. However, I will say this ,great shop.

Just curious are the guys having thier props worked on sure they are propped correctly. Larry at accutech sent me a speadsheet to fill in with all the required performance info necessary to get the prop right. Also, if your shop doesn't have a prop scan look elsewhere, modern technology.

H&H showed my every stage of the recon. Prop scan was what they focused on. What I gathered from the tour, was they can only go on every bit of info you can provide. There are factors that are beyond there control. The reality is the average guy cant afford to have there boat pulled multiple times for fine tuning. So the prop company is only good as your info. Done correctly ,weight, displacement, hp , shaft, gearing, etc, wow you need to be a nasa engineer. I wish I was born smart instead of handsome

Absolutely right. That's why I aborted my plan to have mine done over the winter. I couldn't do it right so I'm waiting for the spring cause junk in junk out.

I have my prop scanned every winter. You would be surprised how many times a blade is slightly out of wack. This way I know I am not coming out again for a $200 haul.

Learning curve tuna, learning curve.
No problem getting the propped tuned up IF you and the prop shop KNOW what the true accurate WOT rpms are before the boat is hauled.

Hale is the best hands down, I have sent many people to them with propeller problems that could not be fixed by other shops and Randy got them solved. As the man that wrote the propscan program he knows what he is doing around the wheels.
Glad it worked out for you.

RPMs

Bill D is spot on. You need to give the prop guy perfect information. A lot of which lies in your Tachometer. It is not uncommon for a factory tachomter to be off by 100 RPMs, which means little in a gas motor but a lot on a slow turning diesel motor.

The tach must be compared with a photo tach before anything else is done. This is the RPM reading that the propeller man needs.
Keep in mind that 1 of pitch, which is a lot has the following impact on RPMs on a diesel that revs up to 2800 RPMs:
1:5 gear 1 pitch = 200 RPMs
1.75 gear 1 pitch = 150 RPMs
2:0 gear 1 pitch = 100 RPMs

I use my photo tach once a year at the start of each season to make use my boat tach is correct. If fact I end up doing the yard boats with mine.

The photo tach is also handy to check shaft speed, Small piece of the tap on the shaft and you can count the turns. On gears where you cannot read the tag and want to make sure of the ratio you can do it with a photo tach.

I may be ignorant( boat wise), but im the kind of guy that when an issue comes up I need to know everything. Im sure my post seem redondant, because Im back in forth on lot of info. I felt good about H&H. Ive only owned the boat for one season. After learning more about prop issues , I wish I had more info, or rather wish I kept better info. Its a hobby, which is quickly consuming me. Im hesitant to make alterations unitll prop is scanned , repaired and back in the water.
