QSM 11 aftercooler

For those of you interested here's a few pics of a Cummins QSM 11 after cooler. No particular reason I'm posting other than the pics may be of interest to some members. This after cooler is BIG.


Remember, ALL sea water cooled after coolers should be regularly serviced.

Don't be lulled into postponing after cooler maintenance because of "low engine hours".

3-4 years max whether you run 100 hours total or 1,000 total

Here's what happens when they are not taken apart....

The good news/silver lining is that the core is fine and the housing is recoverable. They are at Seaboard Marine now for refurb. Caught it just in time.

Tony tells me the root cause of the internal corrosion was salt water mist going in via the air filter, combined with $%&*! Cummins building engines that are put together dry. The O-ring on the raw water inlet was leaking after 5 years of marine age and since there was no grease protecting the dissimilar metals - galvanic corrosion started.

I saw those on boatdiesel, didn't have the details.
