I have always owned documented boats,,, but looking at buying another that is currently documented, and considering registering it instead (State of MA). Wondering about the pros and cons of each.

I think the safety raft requirements are less with registration vs documented boat. Mainly, I only need a USCG approved inflatable vs having a SOLAS A raft. I always fish within 20 miles of shore.

Can anyone else chime in on other considerations I might not be thinking about??

Thanks in advance.

If I remember right, its 13 miles offshore or further in a boat less than 36ft requires an inflatable raft on a registered boat I cant speak for a documented boat..

This is interesting... when i plug 31 ft boat, registered, within 12 miles ... checklist generator gives me this...

Assume that a "bouyant apparatus" could mean something like a hard JimBouy type of raft?

I am ma state reg and the only things I can think of are you aren’t required to have a drill conductor log book and when getting a sticker they don’t check bilge pump/ high water. I have every other piece of safety equipment but I have the 150 mile sticker and carry federal observers.

Thats correct or an IBA which is the inflatable version, they come in valise which is what I have. Recertification on an annual basis for Commercial is required three years if Rec usage. Rates for Recertification are less than a raft but not by much.

I just punched everything in for my 31 ft documented commercial vessel for out to 12 miles and it says no life raft required in cold water months. Chase Levitt said the same thing too but I wanted to double check.
