Replacing the GPSmap 740s

Question for Chris (Wharf Rat) ?

I have NEMA 2000 setup on the boat.
I currenty have a GPSmap 4212 with NEMA 2000 and GARMIN network cable and a GPSmap 740s that does not have NEMA 2000 nor a transducer option.

What 7" Garmin unit do I need (if available) to network to the 4212 with sounder capability ?

I'd like to have all options in both units.

Looking at the rear of your 740S, the small black connector to the left of the radar plug should be a NMEA 2000 connector.

At least that is what my book says, I have a 740S on my skiff as a gps, but I have a stand alone depth finder.

The book says it can act as a Sonar unit, calling out the 720S, 740S and the 750S as sonar capable devices.

Colin is correct; the 740S has both an internal sonar (the 'S' suffix denotes as such) and it has an NMEA2000 interface. To add sonar to the network, you would just have to get a SIX pin (not the 8 or 12 pin) Garmin transducer like a B60 or B744 (The 740S is not a CHIRP capable sonar), add the 740S to a tee on the NMEA2000 bus.

EDIT: That 740S will output the numerical depth data over NMEA2000 to the 4212 but not the full fishfinder functionality. That said, there are a couple of different options we can go over, but unfortunately changing out the 740S to one of the newer 7'' xsv GPSMap units won't allow you to feed the fishfinder to the 4212. I did just get my hands on some closeout/discontinued Garmin GPSMAP XSV models, so there may be another way we could slay this.
