I had the hydraulic trailer deliver it to my driveway and have a crane coming to move the boat from driveway to back yard so I can use my garage again.

Going to get the engine out of the house and into the cockpit so the crane can fly the old engine out and put the new one up there all in one visit. Started stripping the 318 today to reduce weight/make it fit out the door and found all kinds of surprises like a cracked exhaust elbow, broken stud for manifold, cooling hose to trans cooler absolutlely packed full of impeller bits and bilge full of bolts (couldnt see them before because it was so full of oily slop. Pulled lags, unbolted coupling and the rest of the wires and hoses so I can get at it with the chainfall next week. WIll do block and trans separately.

Also picked up the new motor today. They loaded me with a forklift but no technology like that at home so out comes the chainfall and pipe scaffold again. Took about an hour and half to get it out of the truck and put all the stuff away again (read as- hide new V8 from wife). So much fun. Neighbors are sure that I am nuts now. Before there was suspicion but it has been confirmed care of me.

What did you expect after "how many years" of the engine :D;)sitting in the boat ???

Refresh my memory....would engine and trans did you finally choose ??

Mercruiser 383 stroker and ZF 630 down angle in 2.5:1.

Was just looking at the old exhaust manifolds in my truck and the gaskets are all cut from the wrong gaskets (made from other gaskets that didnt have the right openings). Not such a biggie but whoever has been the mechanic for this boat is definitely not worried about an owner asking 'why did you do that". Ran like a top though.

Congrats on pulling the trigger, looking forward to this project. Not many repower projects on here, if any

ZF63A 8 degree down angle is a very very solid gear

Nice power she will rabbit real good. The key to the job is that 2:53 gearing.

That is the hope but really just looking for an efficient cruise at an RPM level that is not too deafening or expensive (gph). Think I will do just fine in each case.

Not really any good parts even on that motor- taking what I can to the scrap yard and I save the water pump but the rest is just used up. Even the hose clamps were over tightened and distorted. Just more confirmation that the repower was a good idea from the start. Thank you all for listening to my ramblings in the build up to this. Its definitely not over:D

Thinking I will clean it out and paint the bilge under the house only. Have to triple check for any wet/soft spots before putting it all back together. Nothing looks bad but want to be sure.

I'm curious

The new Mercruiser 383 stroker ????

Is the engine "new" like in a new factory block and innards ???

Or is the "new" Merc a used 383 that has been "re-manufactured" by Mercruiser?

Makes no difference either way...I'm just curious to all these "new" marine engine blocks, cranks, pistons, heads etc. that are no longer manufactured by the "Big Three" ;)

FWIW

what kind of a transmission was on the 318? That might be worth something.

1.91:1 Velvet drive.

A rusty one anyway. Has a new trans cooler... Any interest?

Reman engine so all parts are new but the block and no emissions BS. Gear is 100% new too. Opened the crates a little today so will post a couple pics later.

If I weren't 600 miles away I would have interest in the velvet drive...you could probably find a buyer on CL or ebay. There were about a million built

Engine and tanks are out which probably only took about 5 hours for me and one other guy. Bilge is still full of oil and still have to get at water and holding tanks but I am moving. Bilges look better than I thought they would and the tanks really arent in bad shape, just dirty as hell. I will change them since its all apart but they would be good for anyone interested. 100 gal each.

Also interesting that the tanks had rubber strips glued to them on the tank support beds and there really is no sign of corrosion at those points. Lots of discussion about that subject and these tanks are 30 years old. Even had rubber hoses at the front to hold them in place between bulkheads.

Have to post pics one at a time. They are on my iphone and I cant resize them as far as I know.
