Needs some help regarding rod holder configuration. I am going to put in between 4-5 holders in stern 90 degree (or straight up and down). I am gonig to put about 3 up each side, again 90 degree straight up and down. I plan on using bent buts for trolling tuna. Should I angle any of them outwards on the sides, ie 45 degrees outward? Does it make a difference if they are facing out while in the outrigger and a fish hits. It's a downeast boat.
Thanks in advance for any good suggestions.

Angle 0* rod holders? You're using swivel obviously if you're fishing bent butts, so you wouldn't have to angle the rod holders, just mount them square to the rail.

French,Swivel rod holders come in three ways 0 degree 15 degree 30 degree.are you talking about twisting or pointing the mounting plate 45 degrees to the rail? if so it doesn't matter on a 0 degree...if i misunderstood your question please let me know

I was a little confused too. I think what you're asking about was angling the rod tips outward when in the release clips. With swivels, you can swivel the rods 360*, so you can angle the rods outwards when in the riggers, and when there's a knock down they'll swivel aft towards the fish on their own...no need to angle the rod holders. You can tighten the nut on the bottom of the rod holder to adjust the pressure and ease of rotation.

Yeah something other than 0* is nice for bass and fluke. Mine's strictly a tuna boat so I'm not gonna bother. EVENTUALLY, the plan is for 18 rods holders. I was planning on welding my own, but with the price of stainless I can spend a little more and just buy nice ones. LD Marine bulkhead mount swivels, 4 on the stern, 7 on each side, and 4-5 mounts for bandits. Probably buy 10 at first and add more once I make some damn money. This boat is currently a 47' hole in the water where my bank account is kept.

Too bad you're not a dealer of them now! I like projects, but my next boat won't need so much work. It's hard when you're under a deadline in commercial fishing...the season doesn't wait for you:eek:

Futher Clarification

Good points, the rod holders will swivel. The are straight up and down. They have a pin that if you pull out the rod butt goes into the base and can swivel. The rod holders are LDMARINE. The stern ones will go straight to the stern. The immediate one just behind the stern, one on the port and one starboard, should those be turned at a 45 degree angle followed by just straight. I guess the issue will I keep the pins in the rod holders when trolling. Are you saying troll with pins out and then yes rod holder then would just follow tuna where ever it pulls rod. If pins in then do you go straight.
I am going to put one 30 degree angled holder near each corner for trolling bass and blues with wire but not put any offshore rods in 30 degree angled one.
Wordy but your input is helpful
Thanks.

Just a comment. If you are trolling bent butts going out of outriggers you may need to see how the rod tip lines up with your riggers. On my boat I have 2 15degree swivels that are installed just do they line up with the rigger clips. 0 degree holders put the tips to high on our boat so the line was going awkwardly to the riggers. If you are trolling flat lines 0 degree holders keep the tips high so you can run baits a little further back more effectively.
