I've read that you should only have same sized batteries. I have a 3 stage charger a battery combiner and the standard isolation switch, one, two, both, off. Seems to me that each battery will take what it needs from the charger or alternator as long as they are both the same type (flooded wet cell) Was thinking about replacing one of my two 8D's with a 4D. Then go both 4D when the other needs replacing. Bad idea?

You are correct, different size batteries won't matter much. Different types- flooded cell vs gel cell, do matter; AGMs vs flooded cell matter less as their charging voltages are simillar.
