So as I might soon becoming a Cummins engine owner. I was wondering if anyone out there was tuned into Seaboard Marine's idea's and stuff. For those who do not know, on Boat Diesel, they are one of the sponsor's and Tony Athens over there has helped several people out with lots of things. He specializes in making some better after market parts for the Cummins engine.

1. One thing I was looking at was going with the fleetguard fuel system that he has going on. I like the double element filter that he sells with the primer bulb as well.

Anyone have any dealings with him or his stuff? I think I am going to be ordering an aftercooler kit as well as some other service items from him as well.

Anyone know what the suction lift is on these typical fuel pumps? One thing that drives me crazy is watching these Racor filters, people always mount them in the bilge. I was wondering if you mounted them in the cabin, behind a door, if you'd be more willing to keep a better eye on them.

Yes I realize that you can get remote gauges.

There is a new suction gauge out now. It holds the highest suction point on the gauge until you reset it. Like a tell tale on a tach. That way you can see if your filters are getting clogged at the dock instead of trying to pull hatches when your underway to see the suction gauge.
Pretty good idea I think

I agree with what I call the drag pointer for sure.

I've always like the stuff on this website too, although not put together well.

Shawn,

The fuel filtration system feeding my Cummins 370s are Seaboard Marine's Double/Double Fleetguard setup. Drag pointer vacuum gauges and squeeze bulbs.
FS19513 20 mic/FS1000 10 mic.

Small footprints multi times the filtering capacity of the old Racor 900s.

Here's a few pics.

Also, Tony Athens' staff at Seaboard Marine built the both exhaust systems for my Blackfin/370s

FWIW,

Bill D

i have 370's in my boat and bought the crankcase breather kits. From cummins it just dumps the oil from the CC vent in the bilge. Also bought one of their raw water pumps as a spare. He discounted everything as i bought it all together. Good to deal with.

Tuna, good people out there @ Seaboard, Tony and Brad.
I've got the Envirovents on the engines and SEAMAX pumps.

Are you running 13 qts MAX in the oil pans?

That center single filter is that for a generator or is that the bulk filter?

Dying to find out how far you can mount these from the engine in regards to suction lift...

middle one is an FS1000 for the generator.

The "bulk" filter is the FS19513. It is a 20 micron filter. 2nd is the FS1000, a 10mic filter. Then onward to the "last chance filter" on the engine which I believ is a 10mic too.

Shawn, you are buying a 6CTA 450 correct? In what hull ?

Shoot Tony an email over on boatdiesel forum with your question on

Thanx for that Bill D

The Cummins placement of the breathing tube on the back of the 6B with a "standard depth" oil pan works OK in on/road off/road applications where the engine is running relatively level.

Change to a shallow oil pan required in boat installs and the fact that the front of the engine is always angled up (particular on plane @ cruise speeds) and the factory breathing tube is in a bad spot. The oil will pool towards the back of the pan.

Run 15-16 qts. and the oil spitting/whipping/foaming is exagerated.

Tony used "common sense" when he came up with the idea to "breath/vent" the engine up front and up high. And reduce the oil level in the shallow oil pan. He suggests 12-13 qts. max.

My old 370s (attached pic) had Seaboard Envirovents but the engines had synchronizers that attached on the front of the timing chain covers. I vented the engines off of the top of #1 valve cover.

Bill, how well does the priming bulb work? If you suck an engine dry does it still help or just with the filter? I see on those filters you can still drain the water off the bottom correct? Thanks.

The Racor is designed not to let water thru. The Fleetgaurd system would let water thru I believe they are just bypass type filters.I would always have something that would not allow water to the injecion pump.Personaly I like the big Dahl filter.

Priming bulb works fine. Replaces the need to carry a gallon of diesel on board to prefill a filter. I still carry a gallon onbaord.

I do a "test drain" every week or two to "check" for nice pink fuel draining from the bottom of the filters.

I noticed the seaboard system uses a 20 mic then a 10 mic. I believe I'm running 2 mic in my raycor. Not sure about the one on the engine. I got a case of elements with the boat and that's what they were so I have continued to run the 2 mics. Any opinions on the correct size? Again they are cummins B @ 370hp.

My understanding of the Fleetguard fuel water separator filters is as follow:

An example is the FS1000. I use this filter as my "2nd filter", the FS19513 1st (primary) then the FF5488 (3rd..last chance on the engine) on the 6BTA 370.

The FS1000 is the final "last chance" fuel filter on a QSM11.. It's a true Multi-Stage filter is its own right rated 5 mic "second pass"..

Racor ratings do not meet any recognized standard authority on filer classification..If they did, companys would use them for "final protection" of their engines..
