Small Downest hull Questions

I am in the market for a new center console in the 17 to 20 foot range. I am currently a part owner of a 23’ Steiger craft Miami, so this boat will be a second boat that I can use solo for fishing at night after work, and for my wife to get comfortable learning to pilot. My initial interest was to get a typical deep–v, like a 19 Maycraft or similar. However, the downeast style center consoles (like Easterns & Seaways) have caught both mine and my wife’s eye. I have no familiarity with this style hull, so my question is, what differences can I expect from this style hull compared to something like the maycraft or steiger? How do they handle? Are they wetter/dryer (in general)? Do they pound in a chop? How about draft? Fuel economy?

I understand some of those questions are dependent on the specific boat, but I am looking for generalizations to see if they are worth looking into. They are scarce in my neck of the woods (Barnegat Bay in NJ), so I was hoping for some feedback here. Thanks for your time.

Thanks Dennis. I love the lines on that hull. Since you and I are in the same area, how does that boat handle a typical summer weekend? You know, the constant 1 to 3 foot chop on Barnegat bay that is a combo of wind driven waves and boat wakes? Does it pound? Is it dry? Thanks for the response.

Hi Yanmar,
I'm interested in increasing the size of my keel (similar to yours). Can you please give me dimensions (length of keel and height)? How does it affect the performance of the boat? Is there less roll, better in a following sea etc.? I'm worried about cavitation issues on the outboard propeller but if it only goes 3/4 the current keel it might not be an issue. Thanks.

xmako - This boat is incredible in a head sea and a quartering sea as well. Sometimes in a following sea she will wander if you dont control your speed as the bow is narrow and tends to steer itself . WET ????? lol what center console isn't wet ................ lol Thats why i now have a Sisu Eastporter - I live with my mom during the week as she has alzhimer , weekends I am home with the family so i will measure up the keel on saturday and post for you . I have no issues with cavitation as the keel end is foward enough to not be a problem . I would think it has to help with pitch and roll ................. Dennis

Thank you for the reply and dimensions. No hurry since the boat is covered and have no plans to take it off until late March.

Well i just sold the engine that was on it ( 90 hp Yamaha ) It still has the trailer and a stripped console . If i get a descent offer on it i will let it go ( around 5 k ) or even a trade of something if not i will restore it back to its original configuration as a inboard diesel . Thanks Dennis
