First I would like to thank BillD for posting in another thread a picture I would like to ask about.

I think the water up North is to cold for growth like we get in Southern New England and New York.

In the picture below on the rudder are white circles which are barnacle bases, a few white things with black centers which are barnacles and about two thirds the way down from the top rudder post a grey area of smaller growth. You can also see these on the wheel.

The question is what is the best way to remove the growth from the rudder and wheel?

Never had anything on my propeller aside from the backside of the hub, probably due to the pitch... but a putty knife should suffice, just round the corners off so you dont scratch the bronze. Clean it up with some scotchbrite pads, the green would work nicely

A angle grinder with a twist coarse wire wheel will make short work of it. you can get the twist wheels at home depot in the welding dept.

This pic is a boat from the Penobscot area.

I'd either grind it or take a wire wheel with the circular buffing machine.

The Blackfin I had shipped back from Delray Beach FL (in water year round) had barnacles 4-5 times as bad on EVERY piece of metal under the water line.

What a bugger to clean all off out of the "nooks & crannies" !

What I was trying to get to is there something to use different than a wire wheel?

I have a 5.75 square foot stainless rudder with stifferners top and bottom. So that is 11.5 square foot plus stiffeners for both sides. In proportion to the rudder in the picture, I have in rudder size 25% barnacle bases and 75% small gray things. It took me over four hours with a 1/2 hp drill and a stiff wire wheel to clean the rudder and I have not started on the wheel yet.

DW802G 4-1/2" Paddle Switch Grinder (grounded) | DEWALT Tools
Take this bad boy, remove the grinder head, rotate 180 degrees and reinstall

Yank off the wheel, get rid of the guard and install one of these in place of it

then slap on one of these for those hard spots

if 36 grit is too much, they make other wonderful flavors, you could even polish your running gear to a mirror finish with this sytem.
