Hello ALL,

As usual, I'm curious ?? :)

In my ("looking at DE boats") travels up in ME I've come across a few identical hulls where one boat will have spray and lifting rails and a "twin sister" hull will have neither.

I understand why spray rails and lifting rails are installed.

My question is can a DE boat be reasonably dry without spray rails ?

And can a DE boat get up and out of the water without lifting rails.

Assume the same hull ? Assume a skeg boat like any of the Beal boats ??

Any first hand observations on the following hulls?

28 Crowley Beal
32 H&H
33 Crowley Beal
34 Calvin Beal
36 Wayne Beal

Finally, do lifting rails add any harshness to the ride of a skeg or even a built down boat ?

Appreciated, Bill D

I'm all about lifting rails...lol I talked the owner of my old boat into them and trying to put them on my boat now. To me it just saves wasted energy in a sense even though it may be penny's with fuel at $4/gal it does SOMETHING and whatever we can do should be DONE.

I will say this, some people on here have said lifting rails cause noise, maybe they do, but I never noticed, maybe because of the generator... LOL

The "noise" associated with lifting rails comes from the difference between full-length lifting rails and rails that are split up between the spray rail and a lifting rail further aft. With the split configuration there is an area for any trapped air that is introduced during the gentle motion of the ocean and waves to gurgle out in a fairly short run. With a full length rail there is no such opening so the air just keeps on trucking back. Drives some people crazy. Puts others to sleep.

To each their own.

A bad bowl of chili will produce more disturbing gurgling than an entire fleet of boats with lifting rails of each and every size, shape and flavor.
