I'm putting a fixed mount radio on the skiff. I have been using a Samsung tablet with Nav and Topo software as a chart plotter/GPS the past few years and since much of my boating is off the charts anyway I see no reason to change it.
I'm looking at the SH GX1700 because it has a GPS built in to run the DSC and it would provide a back up GPS to my tablet. About the only good place to mount it is through the bulk head of the doghouse above the wheel and to the right of the grab bar.

I have never had a VHF radio directly exposed to the elements before. This one is rated to IPX7 for getting wet. But what might be the longer term effects of exposure to the sun and salt?

build a frame with a hinged plexi door to cover the front of the radio that will help keep the weather off of it.
