Please pardon what is probably a stupid question - I'm making a deal on a used Furuno 1650 GPS, removed from a local boat. I want to test it to make sure it powers up and appears to work normally. Can I connect it directly to a car batter to test (assuming the correct fuses are in place)?

Yes you can. Put an chip in it and plug the antenna in, ler er rip.
Run it for a couple hours to be sure ir does not shut down.
Pretty bullet proof units though, you should be fine.

You will get a better picture of the ability of the unit if you put it in your vehicle, pull 12 volts off the cigarette lighter, and go for a ride.

Gps doesnt say too much at rest, going down the road you can check speed, and heading.
