Wondering if anyone is using one of the newer / bigger models and what you thought of them. Doing some research it seems like they’ve come along way.

I have one on my 2018 Seaway HardTop Sport with an Armstrong bracket. Only problem I ever have is people wrapping their line on them when drift fishing.

I have one on my 28 Parker and had one on a 21 Maritime—both Simrad. They work well but mostly use the thru hull b175m on the Parker currently. The second pic shows the transom mount versus the thru hull. The transom mount has downscan, side scan and 3D but don’t use the extra features very often. The transom mount is easy to install and would definitely recommend for a smaller boat.

I have a Garmin GT23 - works pretty well in freshwater, we'll find out how it performs in saltwater and a muddy bottom in a few weeks. I have it mounted on a sliding PVC transducer mount so when I anchor at the beach, it's not dangling by the cable:

I have used the floating transducers the same way, but this is even better. Nice!

Thoughts on transom mount transducers

I can give you my thoughts. I have often wondered why guys don't have moveable ducers. I really hate to be fishing and not know what's going on down there. Generally through hulls only pick up what's under your boat. (I'm talking 25 to 60 fathoms here). How will you know when to throw the tuna bomb ?? How will you know if the fish are laying back feeding on your chum and not coming up to your baits ? I have been using this same method for the last 25 or so years and it works better than a 1000 through hull ducer. It's only 600 watts on an old Sitex CVS 208 but it works great.

I can mark baits up to about 75 ft back and down 30 or more fathoms down. I mark my bomb, swivel and bait. All with 600 watts and the ducer pointed right at it. The flat part on the head of the rig (handle) is the same angle as the head of the ducer. I canturn it 360 degrees and tilt it 45 degrees aft to 35 degrees fwd.

All set up so just a quick drop pin releases the whole rig.

That is a beautiful set up with some great engineering into it. My brother had a similar idea 30 years ago, was looking at it hanging in his garage last week, it had I think about 6ft 1/2" or 3/4" ss pipe connected to a swivel locking antenna mount attached to the transom. Problem with that was when you hooked up and forgot to take it in, the mount got quite bent up, but worked great. Nothing like the caliber of this though. I remember seeing guys making some out of PVC tube mounted on the transom also.

Some day...
I really liked my garmin transom mount. Marked nicely. Like el mar said tho no matter how much I messed with it it would spray on the outboard while underway which I hated

Did you try the Garmin spray shield?

I have not, but my boat is slow and doesn't throw much spray.

Flush mount transducer. We have been using these , as the big plastic fairing blocks that they want you to use, have been breaking and coming apart . They come in zero, 5 and 20 degree , I think. The 20 degree is what we have been using in lobster boats. There are 2 inch and 5 inch I think. Just dont put it where your trailer rollers are.

They work, I had a issue with a thru Hull one September, didn’t really want to haul out so I bolted one on to my zinc on the back and ran the wire up to the unit worked great.
