Chines and seams glassed with 24 oz biax, then 10 oz covering, and now 10 oz going over the entire hull

Flipping hull within two weeks.
69 gallon tank ordered and will go centered between stringers under hull deck. This will give us 260 nm range at 3.75 nmpg. Im hoping for > 4 nmpg at a nominal cruise of 20 kts. Top speed should be 33-34 based on the guys running the 25 ft jumbo and the suzi 140 HP. I bought a Honda 150 which should go on in late May

yes, I have the blue hull 22-23 foot tolman. its been around a while

Most guys build the jumbo to 24 foot, and now a lot of guys go to 25 ft. I did see exactly one pic of a purported 26 ft Jumbo. That was my original intent but the guy that CNC-ed my panels gave me extra wood, and so i stretched it to 27, and increased the bottom panel 1/4 in in thickness and went super heavy on the stringers (stock is 7 inch stringers, i used 9.5 inch versalams glassed both sides for strength in crease and because I wanted a self bailing deck and to put my fuel under deck...)

ill post more as i get further along

roger. I was considering going up to the 200, or twin TLDI Tohat 90s. in the end, i wanted simplicity and best economy so opted for a single motor.

The hull is very light. About 1100 lbs (calculated but i know how much and what weight wood is in the hull and how much epoxy and glass i used).

At completeion, the hull should be about 1900 lbs.

actually, i have a chart with the weights and hwo i can to pick the motor

let me see if i can find it

Here are the numbers. They are accurate. My Widebody loaded up was close to 4000 lbs going out the inlet with 80 gals of fuel and #300 lbs of ice and #200 lbs of bait and chum for an offshore trip. We only had a 90 Hp on it and she got up to 24kts at heavy load, and cruised like 18-19 kts. That was too much tho and propped wrong for that load and we got about 3.5 nmpg on those trips which were at inlet time, we were like 45 lbs / HP

IN this case, going out loaded we are way down into like 32-33 lbs / HP and only 25 for in inshore trip. So it should be fine. If not, I own a very expensive 150 Hp kicker.

the real message Renn was making was that lightweight is good in a planning boat. I dont know how much a 25 ft Steiger weights but Id guess at least double the 2000 lbs my hull will be, and thus I can get away with a small motor. The number one consideration in a planing boat is weight. Glass boats are quick to build, look great, but have to be built heavy to get the strength required.

I wish there was a way to production build ply-eposy-glass boats but there isnt, and so you wont see many and cant buy one very easily.

the tradeoff is slowing down in a stiff breeze.

Amazon.com: Tolman Alaskan Skiffs (Previously A Skiff for All Seasons): Building Plans for Three Plywood / Epoxy Skiffs (9780966871111): Renn Tolman: Books

If you know how to build stitch and glue, you could do it with just the offsets and do your own glassing schedule.

If you wanted complette instructions and a well written book, you'd have to buy the book. The plans are within the book. I saved time by hiring Saltwater workshop to cut out the parts on a CNC machine, rather than lofting all those parts and then cutting them out. Saved me 100 hrs Im sure.

Renn has sold several thousand copies, so I suspect you could get the book at a local library or a used copy on AMazon or ebay.

als, if you are interested, there is a website that has about 100 (?) Tolman builders with ther pics and individual details on how they did their boat. It is called fishyfish and hosted by Stephen Dampier, who is also a Tolman builder. Its the best source of info on Tolman skiffs with thousands of pics).

I hope the moderators dont get mad at me for mentioning this but just another good site, although boat specific.

Great looking hull-please keep the pics coming. Curious as to why you didn't go with the 140 Suzi. I've had no better than fair luck with my '02 90 Honda (bought new), am thinking about the Suzi on my next boat-the power to weight ratio is great and the Tolman owners seem to really like it.

We have just shy of 1200 hrs running time on our 2000 Honda 90. It never let us down. Biggest issue is small jets in the carbs and that you have to upull the manifold off to get the carbs rebuilt. but its been a great motor and so I opted for another one. the 150 is injected.

I just cleaned my tank out. about a gallon of yellow green snot, you gotta love the federal mandate to use ethanol (which also destroys fuel lines, o rings etc)

You do nice work. X2 on the ethanol and small carb jets but also repeated issues with the steering tube rusting shut.
