im changing my tranny oil for the first time in a twin disc 507 or 506. 2:1 gear.I was told to use 30t. Is that what i should be using? how much oil should it hold? is 30t the best ? any preferred brands?

I have had 2 507's. Both ran on SAE 30. I used Rotella. Since it is your first service, there is a small screen filter that should be checked ( a great place to see first signs of trouble). And the oil you take out should be clean and not smell " burnt". Lastly and it should be marked on the dipstick, check the oil running, at idle, prefferably warm. That, in my opinion, is one of the most bulletproof transmissions ever made- it should serve you well!

last 507 i did required sae40 non detergent. took 6 quarts, will no doubt take more to fill the cooler and lines.

I don't think non-detergent cause they call for CD (or higher) rated oil which is high detergent turbo-diesel engine oil.

506 takes straight 30. 507 straight 40. Check your tag. Got tip on cleaning the strainer.
