Trying to find what options I have. Don't want to listen to one rattle.
Seems this Buck Algonquin is the most popular one I'm coming up with.
The 34 South Shore I was on a handful of times had one that I think was better (didn't take a picture of it)
The design is similar to the Buck Algonquin but where the arm hits the inside of the transom jamb it had a white nylon roller and tightened more the more you moved the lever.
Ideas ?
Thanks

here is one that i have, it locks when closed so vibration or a foot will not open it, you need to pull a spring loaded pin that the handle pivots on in order to open it.

The one in the picture will work perfect. If there is any rattle just shim behind the latch side with a stainless washer.

I dont know how many times I've had shit fly out the door with that first latch... I mean coolers get up under it, etc. Ive had that latch on three boats and they all have found a way open.

That second one looks much better...

I have the Buck Algonquin with no issues or rattles either.
When you do your door try and fab a squeegee type gasket for the bottom of the door. Keeps the splash out and holds the door firm so no rattle.

I picked up some materials saturday and been doing a bit of what you describe.
Got some glass strips 3inches wide, glassed on an outside overhang to the bottom edge. The bottom edge of door is 3 inches higher than height of old deck height & scuppers, new deck height will be another 2 1/2 inches higher than the bottom of the door & the door will have ramp up to the new deck with about a 30 degree pitch to the ramp so water coming in won't be an issue.
Made up side inner stops for the sides and the lid I glasses in a channel that locks over the top edge of the transom door.
The door rattling definitely won't be a problem and the bottom will be water tight. I'm more concerned about the latch itself rattling.

Latch

First one pictured works awesome if fitted right. If wrong it may rattle but no ones boat runs that quiet to hear.

that door latch won`t / does`nt rattle a bit. the striker portion has a slight taper so as the door closes it gets slightly tighter. with the door overhanging the transome as you did, you can have just a slight amount of pressure to keep things quiet.

As Starfish said the latch has a provision to keep the swingarm from rattling. Just make sure the gasket at the bottom of the door has enough give in case some small junk gets stuck you can still close it. Looks good !

That's it !
That's the one Ruby Belle has.
Who makes it ???
Anyone ???

I dont know, but on a side note, does anyone know who built that boat? It's a 34 Calvin Beal right?

I like the finishing on the boat, sure looks like it was done right.

I'd like to get a 46 Wesmac built out in this style

I am pretty certain that it was finished by Eric Clark of Southwest Harbor.

Funny thing, before I started my build I called the present owner of the boat because I was interested in possibly purchasing it. He told me that he had gotten a new job and was probably going to keep it. Hopefully he has not become another victim of Mr. Obamas economy, he sounded like a real nice guy. Boat looks to be beautiful, almost to beautiful if you know what I mean
