Just starting to post pictures of the 1973 45' wooden lobsterboat that was designed and built by Donald Wilcox. We have been converting Twist into a modern cruising for a Swiss owner. When complete she will be homeported in Croatia. This boat is built to be CE European compliant . The new cabin is foam core composite construction. A Cat C-9 500 hp is installed. A Northern Lights generator provides 230v/50 hz power. Some unusual features include a 40 gph fresh water maker, European appliances , a hydraulically operated fiberglass folding transom tail gate/ swim platform. The large cockpit and seat boxes were requested by the owner. The teak sole will be laid in a few weeks The cabin windows and port lights are unusual but are in keeping with the original boat

folding transom

The hinges are cast manganese bronze with a delrin sleeve. The pin itself is 1 1/4" dia. s/s. The fiberglass tail gate is 10' in length foam cored glass with web framing. We have loaded with over 1000 lb. with no deflection.

Latest visit to Twist

My latest visit to Twist was unbeilivable. The workman ship was some of the best I have ever had on one of my designs. To say I was BLOWN AWAY is an under statement. For the first few minuets I was speachless and if you know me is hard to do. Thanks Bob for making me look good.

Bob,
My father would be proud to see how the boat he and I built forty one years ago looks like now.
Originally the HAZEL W III was built for musseling in Narragansett Bay, then in 2002 my younger brother and I took the mast, boom and winch out to make it more stable for lobstering. I can still visualize the look on my brothers face when I started to cut the transom out.
If I ever figure out how scan and download some pics, I have a few of it being built.

My brother and I will be up to see her soon. Job well done by you and your crew.

Al Wilcox

Bob, this thread should really be in the ..Downeast Projects and Boat Building..forum. I can't believe that you started this thread almost two months ago. I never look in the sponsors forum, and I believe most others don't also. Once again beautiful work.

I agree with Mr. Wilcox. Beautiful boat to start with. Great workmanship and innovation on the rebuild. You should definitely post it in the boat building forum. There has been a lot of interest in the past in a tailgate transom in particular.

It's refreshing to see that a European will have to also carry around two sets of wrenches & sockets!

Gorgeous vessel; beautiful job!
