Under Deck Update: From WESTLAKE to CORAZON - 35 Duffy

Looking at these other threads I figured I’d share what I have been up to.

I bought the 35’ High Sheer Duffy WESTLAKE from Ed Miller’s family back in September. The goal is to Commercial Fish and Charter the boat for the 2021 season on Long Island – predominantly Freeport although I move the boat around.

The boat was laid out great and had the correct Karma – but it needed Love.

I partnered with Baldwin Harbor Marine (Steve and Sons, Eddie) to help with the refit – they are a hidden gem in the Freeport area. They have deep finishing and mechanical ability and are great to work with. They are working closely with me and I’m able to do some of the work as well. The heavy mechanical, construction and finishing is being done by them. Steve was part of the buying process as he looked at the boat with me and committed to the project.

My son has been helping and the rest of my family has been supportive. I can’t say enough good things about Steve and his crew – it’s turned into just a great effort.

Basically we are replacing everything on the boat

• Remove the Bridge and reshape the house
• Wheelhouse Station
• Replace Electrical, Fuel, Steering
• Update running gear, replace rudder shaft, dripless
• Rebuild the 375 3208, gear
• Replace Deck
• Generator

The Boat came out in October – electrical, the house and the motor were immediately removed.

I drove the motor down to T&S for the rebuild and it was shipped back in November. I’ll leave the story of driving through Brooklyn NY with my motor for another time. The T&S rebuild was on schedule and top notch.

I wanted to put in a trolling valve on my TD507 – going price was $4K for a valve from a TD dealer – so I bought a gear from @Gurryman that had a valve – then sold the core. Total cost for the valve – 1K (Saved 3k).

Steve redid the bilge and supports while I continued with removing the systems – many of the sins of owners past were addressed. Steve caught and fixed a bunch of issues in the bilge I would have missed. All thru hulls/transducers were removed and glassed. Bilge painted w Epoxy paint. All systems in the bilge and under the deck removed.

Engine was put back in the boat the day after Thanksgiving.

The boat was moved into an enclosed sealed tent – the front was sealed after it was blocked in the tent. Enclosed and heated - we were set for Winter.

Next up remove the deck and everything under it. My son was able to help with the demo.

Def yes - I like it - there lots of room and it’ll keep water and sun off the window.

Also it’s part of trademark of the boat - there are a few ‘WESTLAKE’ things on the boat I will keep intact.

I wire lined with Eddie Miller and my great mentor Capt. Bill Cramer off the WESTLAKE. Eddie was a fabulous solo canyon guy but a few times a year when Eddie could break away from the marina he, Bill and I would wire line the Montauk Rips. Bill maintained a slip at Westlake Marina for decades and always left an old car there for all of visiting Connecticut boats staying at Westlake to use. It was with Eddie and Bill that I learned how to stem the strong Montauk tides in search of those monster bass. Fantastic times back then at Westlake Marina ! Capt Jay

The boat has a lot of history which I like hearing about for sure.

Under the Deck

Everything under the Deck was changed out

• Removed all wood, thru hulls glassed and recut, fixed more sins
• All Supports Changed
• 4x6 main beams (replaced 4x4)
• All exhaust changed, exhaust Port glassed and rebed
• Lots of extra touches by Steve and Eddie e.g. reinforced transom w Coosa where exhaust port and underwater lights mounted, put deep bilge pump on an aluminum hangar for future support

Steering, running gear

• Parts Supplied by Rose Marine
• Hydraulic System Replaced
• Pulled/replaced the Shaft Log glassed and recut/rebed
• Replaced Tides Dripless, shaft pulled and checked
• Cutlass bearing changed

Fuel lines and Maretron Monitor

• @WharfRat Precision Marine supplied all electrical - installed fuel monitor for Generator and 3208

Westerbeke 5.5 ECD Generator

• Hansen Marine
• Factory Recon - 0 hours - had an issue on the electric side and was never run

Muffler

• @Soundownsam - unexpected cycles went into designing this - landed well - mufflers for the 3208 takes some thought - Matt was a big help

Nice combination of upgrades, you won't regret the stainless dual ram setup. I installed one 20years ago and it still looks new. Is that a 3.5 KW Next Gen tucked in there?
