Gearing

Great motors the key is to gear it correctly. If you can fit a 23 X 23 wheel go with a 2:0 gear.

What size wheel did you turn w/ the 320hp and 2.5 to 1 in your BHM? Getting ready to hook up the same hp and ratio and think I might swing more wheel than 26 square which is what I have on hand.

Hey John, Still running fine with allot more hrs on it !! I did just have to put a new alternator on it the other day though. Not bad after 11 years of abuse. I think the zapper finally killed it. We are going to fish this week then its coming out for a new top side.

petrel, i believe i had a 28 square and with the 2.5 to1 . there were and still are quite a few in my harbor in all different configurations. 20 knots with 370 hp is doubtful. i know billy had more power in the ruby and i dont think that did 20 knots but maybe im wrong. a buddy of mine had a cummins 8.3 diamond back when they first came out with a 2 to 1 gear and he did 17 or 18 knots if conditions were right, i think those motors were 400 or 440 hp. i found and I'm sure most of you know this....the boat carries weight alot better and is less affected by weight with a bigger wheel, this is why a 2.5 to 1 is a good choice with anything under 350 hp

There is one around here that swings a 28 square, but that's w/ 3 to 1 reduction. Another guy built one w/ 320 hp 3208 and 2.5 to 1 and started w/ a 26 square. He put on a net reel and several thousands of pounds of fish and the boat would still turn full rpms WOT. He ran charters on her in the summer w/ a 26/30 I think. I'm going to be running fairly light, so I was thinking 26x28 or 26X29.

Had a 63P 370hp in my Seaworthy 28. Pushed the boat easily at 20kts if I felt like burning the fuel to do it. Only issue I ever had was a pinhole in the raw water hose sprayed my alternator with a fine mist of seawater, so I replaced the alternator. Shit happens. Otherwise, nice engine for me.
