Any suggestions on the placement of a side scan transducer. I called the lowrance dealer and they are recommending a transom mount because of the wood skegg. (???)

A transom mount is the safe way to go the other option is two through hulls port and starboard as far back as possible

Sailfish, I have a scanner in my boat (Hummingbird). We located the through hull ducer on the starboard well aft. In that spot you can scan to port as well as you are aft of the keel and prop in that position. You do get a bit of distortion to port at speed due to the prop wash. But you know what, i much prefer the view with the port side turned off, as you get a nice clear full screen display of the one side. If you are looking for a wreck or bottom, you just need to circle. In other words, for me, scanning out to one side is not a problem with these units. I would stay away from the transom mounted ducer if at all possible, I have heard from more than one person that they have had trouble reading at speed due to turbulence.
