Ive been GBFT fishing most of my life. 3rd generation out of the Merrimack River to do so. If I had ever gone out fishing and didnt have sabikis, weights, hooks or bait on the boat, my grandfather and father would come out of their graves and strangle me.

I watched WT last night, the most recent episode. And the all female No Limits crew, whom I know locally, were at the Regal Sword and had to beg for basic equipment from the other boats. I was actually excited for these two ladies to have a chance on the show. As a father to 2 young women, it was their chance to have some women represent the industry. Now Im just embarrassed for them. The white knight behavior from the other boats and them clearly being outgunned by fish (12 hour fight) and just generally not knowing what theyre doing is really disappointing to watch, I wish theyd have had Mystique Warrior out of Gloucester there instead.

They might be just a little overwhelmed with being on the show at this point. I would expect to see them settle down.

We've passed off stuff to "the guys" in the past.

Came across a series on Netflix called Battle fish. Show from the NW Albacore tuna fishing. Real fishing boats with real commercial fisherman. No fancy boats, attire or Hollywood BS....

I started watching it the other day and was laughing my ass off at the 3 crackheads on the broken down fishing boat. Was an interesting lesson on that fishery.

You have to wonder how much is staged.

I just wish the show would finally ad some "how too" to it, fish care, equipment, etc. And maybe talk about the boats a little bit. Maybe a couple of episodes summarizing what the offseason maintenance looked like leading up to the first day of tuna fishing. Maybe some Segway's into other types of fishing they do.

I noticed on the show I've never once seen anyone unhook a shark, they always "pull the hook" boat side. Is that how it usually works out? And like 1 in 50 tuna is short, is that how it is?

Watching the same thing over and over gets a little old.

Id love to see more on the boats, especially when they were doing the NC shows. For sharks 9/10 chafe off or bite through the leader. Any that make it to boatside, I just cut the leader as close to the shark as possible.

If you watch enough of the shows as of late they do a little education every so often and have shown off season work maybe once or twice. I sometimes leave it on as I’m doing some work on my laptop as background noise. Could have the soaps on but this is marginally better.

Sharks normally chafe themselves off, however it is not that uncommon to have to cut them off. They probably don’t want people seeing that the sharks still has a hook in its mouth and little bit of leader. And like mentioned above it is a reality tv show, I used to be a huge fan before it came very popular but don’t think I have watched any of it in the past few years. Catching shorts is also very common in Chatham ( where most of them fishes this year). There is definitely a lot of bs that happens out there while they are filming.

I met those ladies a few weeks back, they seemed like good people never talked to them on radio and have only seen them fishing a few times tho.

The entire show was scripted. They need drama or no one would watch the show.

I would argue it's the fish pens.
No doubt the fish pens have screwed the price we get. However when Wicked Tuna gives out #'s, depths, rigging (which they never did) results in putting time in/learning out of the equation which directly effects our quota.... You can watch the show and YouTube and have a better than 50% chance of hooking one. It took me 2 years in the 90's before someone let me in on the wiping the leader "secret". It's a joke.
