Its not how many...but being able to move your rods where needed...i have 17 swivel rod holders made by C.J.Marine....some straight some 15 degree

Trolling, drifting, anchored ?
I assume "big poles" you mean 130s bent butts from the swivels.
For me conditions dictate how many I can fish (other than trolling) but I don't do much trolling with 130s anyway.
Also depends if you are fishing up or down (weighted down or surface)

My limit is based upon the # of 130's I have which is 4. On most boats there are a limited # of advantageus spots to fight a fish from a rod holder. Aft corners have always worked best for me, 2 on each corner fixed for the rest.

Fighting the fish in the aft, but I , and most like all there holders to be swivels.
