What is Difference between Ship, Yacht and Boat?

The term can refer to a vessel that is motorized or not motorized and either used for work, such as in the case of a fisherman or water police, or for recreational purposes such as weekend fishing or relaxing.[/FONT]

You can put a boat on a yacht and a yacht on a ship, but you can't put a ship on a yacht or a yacht on a boat

It's funny but heard something years ago and always made sense to me. The difference between a ship and a boat is nothing about size but about her. Whether she is being used all the time or not, if she sits there and people just use her for a few hours its a boat. If people live and work on her, she is alive and is a ship. Of course that isnt going to fly, from the point of working on ships, they are a living figment of anyone working on them.

definition that is often used is that you can fit a boat inside a ship but you cannot fit a ship inside a boat. A ship is a commercial vessel such as a passenger ship, a freighter or a tanker. A boat is smaller - could be a fishing boat, a dinghy, a sailboat, a row boat, etc.

For me a yacht is often an extension of a rich mans ego or in some cases an imaginary extension of his sexual organ.Much like expensive sports cars and top end auto the yachts of the automotive world.

I used to always get yelled at by my chief because i called all the ships i worked on boats, i still call them boats. I know the difference between the two, but the only time i call them a ship is then the words "this piece of sh*t" comes first.
